Supporting Nursing Mothers in the Workplace, by Mark Perlberg, CEO
Federal laws require that employers of a certain size accommodate nursing mothers by providing adequate breaks and a private, non-bathroom space for pumping breast milk for one year after the child’s birth. However, many mothers returning to work following the birth of a child still face challenges in the workplace when trying to continue breastfeeding. In addition to following the law, supporting a working mother’s transition back to work is good for business, often leading to benefits such as a decrease in turnover rates, absenteeism and recruiting costs, as well as increased loyalty and job satisfaction. Communication is key to supporting a nursing mother, as each person will likely have different needs depending on their circumstances and role within the company. Oasis is here to help our clients ensure that they are complying with the law and creating a supportive environment for nursing mothers.
