Employees Are Committed and Engaged

According to the 300-plus business owners who responded to our recent survey on the workforce challenges affecting their business, it appears that employee engagement is not a problem for most. Some 87% of respondents said they ‘strongly agree’ or ‘somewhat agree’ with the statement “the staff in my business are committed and engaged.” A further 87% of respondents believe that “employees in my business have opportunities to learn and grow.”

However, when asked whether “I get the best possible performance from our staff,” the response was not as confident with 76% who said they ‘strongly agree’ or ‘somewhat agree.’ This may be a reflection of the commonly understood challenge that it takes a lot of time to manage and direct people, and this is often time that small business owners don’t have. Further, engagement can only go so far without the additional support of training and development so employees can understand what they can do on a daily basis to help in moving the company forward.

Consider these tips to help ensure you are getting the best out of your employees:

  • Clarify purpose. Employees today want to do work that is personally meaningful to them and where they feel they are contributing to a higher purpose that aligns with their values… a place where they can show up and do their best every day.
  • Offer flexibility. Employment practices have progressed to such a degree that everyone expects a certain amount of flexibility. Consider making available opportunities to have flexible schedules, opportunities to work from home, or simple pleasures such as being able to bring a dog to work, gain a gym membership, or an unlimited vacation policy.
  • Explore Growth. “Lifelong learning” is a catchphrase that has been around for several years, but it still rings true today when it comes to employees who are in constant pursuit of opportunities to learn and grow. Consider temporary job transfers, training opportunities, assigning a mentor, or even job sharing to help employees to get the growth they need to advance in their careers and enhance what they contribute to your company.
