On June 28, 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld key components of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), including the individual mandate and the employer mandate. On June 28, 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the individual mandate, a key provision in the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Specifically, this mandate requires that, effective January 1, 2014, health insurance must be purchased by most U.S. citizens and legal residents, or they will be penalized. Additionally, the employer mandate is upheld and will require that employers with more than 50 employees provide coverage to full-time workers or pay a penalty.
