Note: This article includes updated information from June 17 on the EIDL program (No. 2 below) and from June 9 on the Main Street Lending Program options (No. 3 below). 

Applying for a loan can be a stressful experience on any given day, but is especially so now, as more and more business are facing financial hardships as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Though the Paycheck Protection Program has provided the largest stimulus ever for small businesses, with 30 million businesses eligible for loans under the program, applying for these loans has proved challenging, especially as the authorized funds are quickly exhausted. The deadline for having a loan approved by the Small Business Administration is June 30, 2020.

Update: On July 4, 2020, President Trump signed into a law an extension of the PPP application period to Aug. 8. 

With the economic shutdown in the United States moving into its third month, the federal government responded to further help America’s small businesses weather the financial challenges. On June 5, 2020, President Trump signed into law the Paycheck Protection Program Flexibility Act that amends some provisions of the PPP program that already has provided more than $514 billion in funding to nearly 4.6 million small businesses since the first week of April.

The PPP Flexibility Act modifies certain provisions related to the forgiveness of loans under the PPP, allowing recipients of loan forgiveness under the PPP to defer payroll taxes.
